Associations between Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Psychological Factors in Korean High-School Girls

|
Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal disease that may significantly deteriorate the quality of life in a person. Factors being associated with IBS are not clearly identifi ed yet, but psychological factors have been suggested to play an important role in the development or exacerbation of IBS. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between IBS and psychological factors (anxiety, depression, and stress) in Korean high-school
girls for whom there were only a few studies about IBS.
Methods: A total of 406 high-school-girls were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire measuring IBS symptom (Rome III criteria), anxiety (Goldberg’s Short Screening Scale for Anxiety, Korean version), depression (Children’s Depression Inventory, Korean version), stress (Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument, Korean version), demographic characteristics, and health behavior. Associations between IBS and psychological factors were examined using chi- quare test and multiple logistic regression analysis.
Results: The prevalence of IBS was 23.9% and mixe d constipation and diarrhea (70.1%) was the most common subtype of IBS. Depression (odds ratio, 1.05; 95% confi dence interval, 1.00 to 1.10) and anxiety (odds ratio, 2.44; 95% confi dence interval, 1.18 to 5.05) were significantly associated with IBS even when those factors that were significantly different between IBS and non-IBS group in chi-square test were adjusted by multiple logistic regression analysis. There was no
association between IBS and stress.
Conclusion: IBS was signifi cantly associated with anxiety and depression in Korean high-school-girls, which suggest that proper evaluation and management of psychological factors for adolescent who are suffering from IBS may be needed.
